Navigating the Archive Commons - Free online seminar on 7 May
Wednesday 6 May 2026
We’re flagging this use Re: Use – Navigating the Archive Commons for EkoFilmmaking, a free online seminar on 7 May, 18:00–19:30 (UK) / 20:00–21:30 (Türkiye) exploring ecological and ethical filmmaking through archival reuse. This call was shared on the Radical Film Network.
Organised by FfilmSchool and EkoFilm, the session brings together perspectives from Türkiye and the UK to discuss artistic approaches, licensing and fair dealing, and how working with existing footage can support low-carbon film production.
Re: Use is a collaborative response to the film industry’s culture of excess. This initiative promotes low-carbon filmmaking by reusing and reinterpreting archival footage. By prioritising existing resources over new, resource-heavy shoots, it offers an approach to storytelling that reflects EkoFilm’s vision of sustainable production, FfilmSchool’s focus on anti-extractivist filmmaking, and reimagines discarded materials as rich, generative ground for ecological cinema.
Speakers include:
Nurten Bayraktar (EkoFilm, Türkiye): Sustainability in the film industry.
James Price (FfilmSchool, UK): Navigating the Archive Commons.
Deniz Tortum (Filmmaker, Türkiye): Artistic perspectives on archival reuse.
Claudy Op Den Kamp (Bournemouth University, UK): Fair dealing and ethical reuse.
Emily Renshaw-Smith (OpenPlanet, UK): reuse as ecological activism.
