Emerging Filmmakers Night introduces live-streamed film parties

Wednesday 22 April 2020, by Erifili Missiou, Mydylarama team

Mydylarama is looking forward to teaming up with the EFN team. Keep your eyes open...

With the world’s film festival and screening events on an indefinite hiatus, the Emerging Filmmakers Night programming team, filmmaker Erifili Missiou, comic Mike Sheer and filmmaker Ben Plumb, launched their own live-stream curated screening event on the 6th of April, the first of its kind, and attracted an audience of over 1,000 people.

Undaunted by the challenge of Covid-19, they decided to continue with their successful formula of curated award-winning shorts followed up with filmmaker Q&As in a fully integrated live-stream set-up. The show was compered by their stand-up comic MC and featured video-call interviews with the filmmakers and real-time questions from the viewers.

This month’s programme, ’The Write Stuff’, was built around high-quality screenwriting. The night started with a contemporary classic of the form: ’The Ringer’ by Chris Shepherd, a mixed media story about a father and a son reconnecting. Then there was Paul Frankl’s ’Gold Star’ a subtly subversive film about a young woman’s conversion to Orthodox Judaism and ’The Call Centre’ by Louisa-Connoly Burnham a dark tale of a woman who finds herself out of her depth after tracking down an over-the-phone client. Next month’s programme will focus on acting.

Ordinarily a real-world screening event above a pub in Borough, the night is dedicated to showcasing the work of indie film’s up-and-comers. EFN offers them the opportunity to see their work on a big screen, engage directly with an audience and share their story with an interested and supportive community. It also gives a mixed-discipline cinephile audience rare access to quality new work from emerging directors. With a view to diverging from the more academic tone of their peers, stand-up comic MC, Mike Sheer, sets a light-hearted but incisive tone, balancing a fun and inclusive atmosphere with involved and exploratory conversation. It all sets up a relaxed networking mixer at the end of the night.

Some of the award-winning filmmakers that have participated in EFN include:

Duncan Cowles, Matt Holt, Ben Mallaby, Ross Domoney, Katie Bonham, Andy Sowerby, Lara Zeidan, Lauran Cooney, Hannah Hill, Beau Fowler and much more.

Next month’s live event will take on the 18th of May and will focus on acting/ if you are a filmmaker and want your work to be SEEN, tune into the EFN socials for announcement
