Warton’s war on Yemen, directed by Phil Miller

Monday 18 October 2021, by Abla Kandalaft

Investigative journalism website Declassified UK investigates an arms factory in Warton, Lancashire making warplanes to bomb Yemen - the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. Interviewing local residents and a former Foreign Office lawyer, our team tracks down a secretive supply flight that Britain’s largest arms company BAE Systems sends every week from Warton to Saudi Arabia, and questions whether the air war could continue without UK support.

Phil Miller (our guest on the podcast to talk about Keenie Meenie) is back with this short doc. At only 26 minutes, it lays bare Britain’s complicity in the atrocities committed in Yemen, while the people on the ground in Warton are kept in the dark. Presenter Matt Kennard elicits a range of reactions. Some residents are just happy with the job creation that comes with the industry but others express sad and shock and remark that money is better spent dealing with the current misery and poverty plaguing the region (and much of the country!). Interspersed with heartbreaking footage of young Yemeni victims of the bombing, it is a sober, comprehensive and to the point documentary that once again illustrates the good work done by the team at Declassified.
