Nino’s Place
23 January 2011, by Clotilde Couturier
11 am on 11 July 1995, from his local radio station, 26 year-old Nino announced to the rest of the world the fall of Srebrenica. Later that same day, he is one of 15000 men forced to leave the city, heading for the free zone, some 100 km away. Nino will never reach his destination. 14 years later, the women of Srebrenica march for those that disappeared on that fateful day, like they do every 11th day of every month.
Ever heard of Srebrenica ? On the 11 July 1995 the Serbian Armed Forces (…)

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Director Marina de Van on Don’t Look Back
23 January 2011, by Abla Kandalaft
Q AND A - MARINA DE VAN : NE TE RETOURNE PAS (DON’T LOOK BACK)
Although Marina de Van has followed the traditional route of Sorbonne and Femis, from which she graduated in 1996, she is regarded as a maverick film-maker, her films hardly fitting into the neat categories French distributors seek to slot them in. After directing a number of shorts, she made her name for herself with the uncompromising and brutal Dans ma peau (In my skin). Ne te retourne pas, a gruelling and financially (…)

Questions-Réponses autour de Falsos Positivos
23 January 2011, by Abla Kandalaft
The film uncovers the shocking truth behind the phenomenon of the falsos positivos, or false positives, a term that outside a scientific context is used by Columbians to designate the civilians killed by the military and dressed up as guerillos to hike up the army’s FARC executions statistics. Incredibly, although the subject matter is uncompromisingly grim, this is no tear-jerker. The viewer is regularly treated to lengthy shots of “daily life in Columbia” to the beat of hip-jerking gems (…)

Lullaby for Pi
2 January 2011, by Kelu13
Can a humming through a closed bathroom door really heal two broken hearts? Can it erase the sound of a phone that won’t ring and the words of a diary written day after day on the same walls, only to disappear once again the next day?
Lullaby for Pi is a tale, a fairy tale, with the marvellous Forest Whitaker as the fairy godmother of two distressed and disturbed lovers, displaying just the right amount of charm, humour and perkiness.
As in any fairy tale, music is all around as the main (…)

Dernier étage gauche gauche (Top Floor Left Wing)
29 November 2010, by Abla Kandalaft
When they chose the poster that would advertise the film, little did the team behind Dernier étage gauche gauche imagine they would have a lawsuit on their hands. Indeed, the day of the Paris premiere of the film, the producers and director informed us pre-screening members of the audience that they were being taken to court by bailiffs for (incredibly) sullying their professional reputation and a fortiori encourage acts of violence against them. The poster features veteran French actor (…)

Saw 3D
14 November 2010, by Abla Kandalaft
Saw 7 ended the franchise with a torture –heavy yet slightly anticlimactic bang. The 6 “episodes”, although inconsistent, were rich in suspenseful twists and turns, which allowed the most squeamish of us to periodically shield our eyes and ears, whilst closely following the trials and tribulations of John Kramer and friends. Saw 3D torture scenes make up about 97 per cent of the film. It had a 3D engagement to live up to and it went bombastic on the gore, becoming far too nauseating to be (…)
